Why AI writing sounds generic in the first place

The grand majority of people who try AI writing tools walk away with something that technically covers the topic but feels like it could have been written by anyone. That is not a coincidence, so let's explore ways to use AI for writing while keeping your own voice.

You gave away the parts that make it yours

When you hand a prompt to an AI and say "write me an article about X," you are essentially skipping the parts that actually make writing interesting. You did not tell it your take on X, or the specific story you were going to open with, or the thing about X that everyone gets wrong. You handed over the wheel and then wondered why you ended up somewhere generic.

The AI did not steal your voice. You just never gave it the inputs your voice depends on.

AI averages everything out

A language model is trained on a huge volume of text and learns to produce output that statistically fits the pattern of what good writing looks like across all of it. That means it gravitates toward the middle, like the safest phrasing or the most common structures. It is not that it is actively trying to be boring. It is just that averaging across millions of writers produces something that sounds like no one in particular.

Your voice comes from the edges though. The opinions that are a bit uncomfortable, the comparisons nobody else would make, the way you cut a sentence short because you know the reader already gets it. Where your voice actually lives

People talk about voice like it is some mysterious property that either exists or does not. It is more concrete than that. Voice is a set of choices, and most of them happen before you write a single sentence.

The specific angle you find interesting, the moment you noticed something was worth saying out loud, that is already part of your voice. Two people can write about the same subject and produce completely different articles because they came at it from different directions driven by different experiences.

The point of view you take

Not just your opinion, but your position. Where are you standing when you look at this? What have you seen that makes you think the common take is wrong or incomplete? That is the thing no model can generate from a blank prompt because it does not know what you know or what you have been through.

The examples you choose

Generic writing uses generic examples. The examples that make writing feel like yours are usually specific and a bit unexpected. They come from your actual experience or from something you noticed that most people walked past. An AI will reach for the most obvious illustration, so you should reach for the one only you would think of.

The sentences you cut

A lot of voice is negative space. The thing you decided not to explain because your reader is smart enough. The paragraph you deleted because it was padding. The caveat you left out because adding it would have killed the momentum. Cutting is a voice decision and it is almost entirely yours to make.

What to delegate and what to keep

The goal is to use AI tools for the parts where they are genuinely useful and stay involved in the parts that actually matter for how your writing sounds.

Let AI handle structure and first drafts

Getting a rough structure down, filling in sections that are mostly factual, cleaning up sentences that are technically fine but a bit clunky, handling the parts of writing that are more about execution than thinking. These are good uses of AI. They save time without costing you anything important.

Keep the angles, examples and edits

The opening angle, the specific examples, the decision about what to cut, the moments where you push back on the obvious take. Keep those. They are cheap in time and they are everything when it comes to whether the final piece sounds like you or like a summary of the internet.

If you review a draft and find yourself accepting everything the AI wrote without changing a thing, that is a sign the piece is going to sound generic. Not because AI is bad but because you have not put yourself into it yet.

One practical way to close the gap between AI output and your actual voice is to stop starting from zero every time. A writing profile gives the model context it otherwise has to guess at.

What a writing profile captures

A writing profile can include things like:

  • How you typically open articles
  • The topics you care about
  • The audience you are writing for
  • Phrases you avoid
  • The level of formality you use
  • The kinds of examples you tend to reach for
  • And potentially much more you consider important

It is basically a persistent brief that travels with every draft so you are not re-explaining yourself from scratch each time. Jonathan Mast calls the written version of this a a voice guide and argues the test is simple: could someone who knows you read a piece without a byline and know it was yours?

The more specific it is, the more useful it gets. "Write in a conversational tone" does almost nothing. "Avoid hedging language, cut explanations the reader probably already knows, prefer concrete examples over abstract principles" actually shapes the output more.

Drafts that sound like you from the start

When the model has that context baked in, the first draft lands closer to your voice and needs less correction. You still edit and you still bring the angle and the examples. But you spend less time undoing generic phrasing and more time on the parts that actually require your thinking.

The real problem was never AI

When people say AI writing sounds generic, they usually blame the tool. But the tool is just doing what it was asked to do. The problem is that the ask did not include the things that make writing personal.

AI cannot generate your perspective and it cannot know the specific thing you saw last week that made you want to write this. It cannot decide what to cut, nor can it pick the example that is slightly weird but perfect. Those are yours, and no improvement to the model changes that.

Use AI for speed, keep yourself for voice

The writers who get the most out of AI tools are the ones who stay genuinely involved. They use AI to move faster through the parts that are mostly mechanical and they stay in control of the parts that require judgment. The output reflects that split. It is faster to produce and it still sounds like them.
